Sector-wise contribution of state income reveals a clear picture about the contribution of various productive sectors to the income of any state or country. The three different sectors of an economy are the primary sector which includes agriculture and allied sector, forestry, fishery and mining; the secondary sector, which includes industry, construction, electricity, gas and water supply, etc. and the services sector, which includes transport and communication, trade, banking, insurance, real estate, community and personal services, etc. In the North-Eastern States of India, among the various sectors, the primary sectors, i.e., agriculture and allied sectors and others, have been contributing the major portion of state income since independence.
The sector-wise contribution of each sector to the Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) of each state are discussed below:
Arunachal Pradesh: In Arunachal Pradesh, the contribution of the primary sector gradually decline from approximately 37% in 2004-05 to 29% in 2013-14. The contribution of the secondary sector increased its share to NSDP marginally from 30% in 2004-05 to 33% in 2013-14. Again, the contribution of the services sector gradually increased its share to NSDP from 33% in 2004-05 to 39% in 2013-14.
Assam: In Assam, the contribution of the primary sector declined from approximately 27% in 2004-05 to 22% in 2013-14. The contribution of the secondary sector declined from 25% in 2004-05 to 19% in 2013-14. However, the contribution of the services sector increased considerably from 48% in 2004-05 to 59% in 2013-14. Thus among all the three sectors, the contribution of the only services sector has shown some improvement in respect of sector-wise contribution to NSDP of the state.
Manipur: In Manipur, the contribution of the primary sector declined from approximately 25% in 2004-04 to 20% in 2013-14. The contribution of the secondary sector also declined from 37% in 2004-05 to 27% in 2013-14. However, the contribution of the services sector has increased from 38% in 2004-05 to 53% in 2013-14, which is, no doubt, a notable achievement.
Meghalaya: The sector-wise contribution of NSDP in Meghalaya over the years shows marginal changes only. The contribution of the primary sector declined from approximately 24% in 2004-05 to 15% in 2013-14. On the other hand, the contribution of the secondary sector increased marginally from 25% in 2004-05 to 30% in 2013-14. Again, the contribution of the services sector also increased marginally from 51% in 2004-05 to 55% in 2013-14.

The contribution of the secondary sector marginally declined from 15.19% in 2004-05 to 14.92% in 2013-14. However, the contribution of the services sector improved further from already high 60% in 2004-05 to 65% in 2013-14.
Nagaland: In Nagaland, the contribution of the primary sector declined sharply from approximately 36% in 2004-05 to 27% in 2013-14. The contribution of the secondary sector slightly increased from 12% in 2004-05 to 13% in 2013-14. The contribution of the services sector increased from 52% in 2004-05 to 60% in 2013-14. Thus, the economy of Nagaland is being diversified slowly in recent times.
Sikkim: The sectoral contribution of NSDP in Sikkim has shown considerable changes over the years. The contribution of the primary sector declined from approximately 19% in 2004-05 to 10% in 2013-14. On the other hand, the contribution of the secondary sector increased sharply from 29% in 2004-05 to 60% in 2013-14, which is a notable achievement in a hill state.

The contribution of the primary sector declined marginally from approximately 26% in 2004-05 to 24% in 2013-14. The contribution of the secondary sector also declined from 23% in 2004-05 to 20% in 2013-14.
